The Hundred Million Dollar Diamond Heist at Harry Winston!

user-pic

hwdiamondwreath.jpgI just read that armed robbers cleaned out Harry Winston's in Paris on Thursday, Dec 4th at closing time. They reportedly took over 105 million dollars worth of jewels! There were 15 of them, some dressed as women. They had guns and hit employees over the head with them (thankfully no one was killed). They spoke a foreign language and knew the employees by name. Which means they probably have been in there before and pretended to 'shop'.

You know, Hollywood movies glamourize these types of heists and it's quite scary actually. I have been in many Harry Winston boutiques as well as other jewelers such as Bvlgari, Cartier, etc. I always felt quite safe due to the armed guards but apparently they are not much protection against a band of armed robbers. This is why I am not going to the mall this year to shop! There have been too many reports of robbery in parking lots and shootings at upscale stores-- even though I always valet park, you're not safe inside, either! I am going to shop online for holiday gifts (at my favorite online boutique). our teenage nieces and nephews will just get cash, they prefer that anyway.

What about you, will you brave the crowds and possible crime or will you cyber shop?

  • wow, i wonder if they'll make a movie next.

  • I will shop online and go to specialty boutiques. But will stay away from the mall

  • Right here is the reason why I love living in Canada.

    • Crime is EVERYWHERE!! my Dear!

I wont be stepping foot in the Mall this holiday season either T~~ I make a call, and they ship, perhaps a little bit of mooching on the Web as well!! xo

      • Yes, crime is everywhere... but a whole lot less frequent in Canada, likely not because of any cultural differences but simply because Canada has 32 million people, the use has 320 million, it's a matter of numbers.

  • No malls for me. I am doing a few small boutiques and online for the rest.

    Happy Holidays!
    xoxo

  • Oh this is freaky. I wonder if we can get the pictures of what was stolen!

I remember the Cartier store in Sloane Street (London) getting broken into in broad daylight too!

And can I be adopted as your nephew this year, please? :) Hehe.

    Stay safe!

  • I will still go to the stores.

Personally, I believe that all women should carry pepper spray or mace, whenever they go out to places in public alone. There are a bunch of crazy people out there, but that should never stop anyone from going out to shop.

However, online shopping is a nice touch, because the retail experience in a lot of stores these days seems more like a people watching ordeal, as opposed to a bunch of people who enjoy shopping and do not need anyone staring them down to feel like they need to make a purchase.

  • I have to say that you sound so cocky/conceited on how you write your blogs, and I was bothered more on your cockiness rather than the jewelry heist.
