Will you fall for Posh? Victoria Beckham Collection Debuts at Stores

I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw Victoria Beckham‘s Freshman attempt as a fashion designer. She presented ten well tailored and fetching dresses and I have to admit that I secretly covet all ten but will probably pick just one. Though disturbingly similar to Roland Mouret (whom she called upon for advice) the dresses still carry its own distinct and very “Posh” style. VB kept the line basic, simple and quite wearable. But I’m not so sure it’s worthy of its hefty price tag as the dresses range from $1200-$3800, why wouldn’t you just buy a Roland Mouret? The jury is still out but as her limited 400 pieces arrive at boutiques worldwide, I predict a sell out. After all, US Weekly trumps Vogue in modern day society and VB rules the tabloids. Victoria Beckham collection at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus (Coral Gables, Beverly Hills and Houston) in North America. What do you think? Snob or Slob?

  1. I have yet to see them in person but love the look of the Bidart (she wore it in red recently to Milans Fendi party). But I do agree for a first line the price is very hefy for as you clearly say Tina only a Freshman! But RM and herself both being managed by Simon Fuller I am sure Mr Mouret has been well used and helped…apparently they use his pattern cutters etc.

Which one will you pick out Tina…have you seen all of them in person? Do you have any contacts where they will be selling the dresses as often you get better colours in the US like your RM Moon dress in Red that never hit our stores just the black and dove grey?!

    Thanks for your help.

  2. I do like the look, which is odd because I don’t much care for how VB dresses (she always overdoes it), but then as you say the aesthetic is very Mouret. I do wonder whether they will suit different shapes as well as his dresses do. These all look as though they were modelled on Mrs Beckham, which is great if you are built like her but not so good if you don’t want to live on a handful of strawberries and edamame beans a day. What impressed me most about Mouret’s dresses was that they best suited women with a bit more meat on their bones.

I agree though that the price point is too high if they’re directly competing with Mouret, for all that her collection is a very creditable effort. That does make me wonder why Mouret agreed to assist her if she’s going to be cannibalising his market.

Mouret would not refuse her as she catapulted him to the forefront of tabloids. That pink Moon dress with matching pink ostrich birkin got him more press mileage than any editorial or other actress…

  4. dresses right above the knee are much better on my figure…but obviously VB can pull off the below the knee look bc she has a hundred of these exact dresses in her wardrobe already.

  5. I read somewhere she insisted on high quality finishing and tailoring techniques. But right now I have a hard time seeing 3k plus. I really like the look, while it is ‘heavily influenced’ by Mouret, it will be instantly recognizable as a Victoria Beckaham dress. I agree it will sell, if only so people who own one can say they got one of the limited 400 pieces.

Yes, good point. I suppose that 400 pieces should not really eat into his market share either, initially at any rate.

Didn’t like the pink with pink look though. There, right there, in a nutshell is my whole problem with how she dresses. She takes something that could be fabulous and then accessorises it with all the taste and judgment of a demented 6-year old. Why not something like a dark navy ostrich birkin with the pink dress? Or if she really wanted colour (navy being a neutral), how about a contrasting colour that is not pink? Did pink with pink really make it a better picture? As I recall, it was DB’s first day out with Galaxy so they’d have taken her picture no matter what.

I’m being ridiculous right? VB’s ambition is clearly not to dress well, or even fashionably, but well enough so that people take her picture even if it makes her look like a loon.

I think it looks super gorgeous for a first timer. No doubt it has been very much influenced by Mouret, but it’s definitely very much VB’s style and the fabrics used are pretty good too.

As mentioned above mc, qb, RM dresses are way more versatile and a true testimony to his genius as the cutting of the dresses can fit much more body types and still make them look fabulous.

A real talent is getting someone built like Jennifer Hudson to look gorgeous whilst wearing your creation.

I think it was a big mistake to launch her first collection on RM’s coattails. It’s like a pale imitation. I didn’t think too much of her other fashion efforts like dvb jeans or her sunnies collection, somehow they all look like imitations of other brands.

She’s like an older version of Paris Hilton and slightly less skanky but nonetheless, being famous for nothing in particular…..
