We couldn't help but notice that capes were all over the fall 2009 runways, with our favorites being from Marc Jacobs, Project Runway, DKNY, Thakoon, Ralph Lauren, and Erin Fetherston. It's fun to go a little wild with the fabrication and the print, but for the most part, you'll end up getting the most mileage out of a cape in a neutral color palette. Plus, you want to make sure you get a cape that fits you; be sure to pick the right size for you, as extra fabric in the wrong places can give the appearance of weight, opposed to an air of coolness. Also, you don't really want to channel the poncho look of seasons past, so make sure the cape is more of a jacket, instead of a sweater.

We love the Cape-style Jacket ($49, Newport News), as it gives a good fit and is available in the ever-classic black, and olive green. For the extremely budget-consious cape-seekers, try this 4-Button Cape in Black ($12.49, Target), as it will give you the trend at a price that you won't regret. Another affordable option is the sophisticated Mossimo Wool Cape in Ebony ($11.24, Target), that will make layering incredibly simple. For a bit more of an investment, try the Navy Pocket Poncho by Beny & Hizzin ($75, edressme.com) and pair with some short biker gloves or long, elbow-length elegant ones.
If a bit of print is what you crave, try the Plaid Cape ($39, Newport News), in either red or black or the Mossimo Wool Cape in Teal ($11.24, Target) which will surely add a healthy dose of color to your look.
Any way you swing it, capes are in for fall 2009!
