Alice + Olivia Elyse Silk Dress

aliceoliviawhitedress.jpgWhat a fabulous summer frock from Alice + Olivia!!! In the palest of minty color silk with mint colored belt in this season’s must have asymmetrical style. I love asymmetrical dresses, baring a smooth shoulder is oh so sexy!

This dress is perfect for a close friend of mine as the long sleeve is on the right side– she has a large birth mark that runs the length of her right arm (Called “port-wine stain” or naevus flammeus– a vascular birthmark consisting of superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin which produce a reddish to purplish discoloration of the skin).

She is a beautiful lady and though the mark doesn’t bother her (nor her friends and family), strangers often stare and comment on it which makes her uncomfortable. She’s resorted to wearing cardigans and boleros daily to avoid the questioning (even in 100 degree weather!).

A quick etiquette lesson: if you see someone with a large and distinctive birthmark–

1. Do not stare– Even if you think you’re being discreet, trust me, you’re not.  Look if you must, and then go back to your business.

2. Do not scream–  It’s a birthmark for God’s sake, not an infectious disease.

3. Do not ask “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”– Because the only thing wrong with them is being in the room with an idiot.

You are too funny. How awful for your friend to endure the stares and comments. People are so rude!

People really are! I have a scar that runs from my knee to my ankle from a broken leg years ago, and while it has since faded a bit, for years I would get the stares and even people asking to TOUCH it (gross!) if I ever wore shorts or a skirt without opaque tights.

Glad you are there to give the proverbial stink-eye on behalf of your friend!
