I shopped for basics while in LA this week and was annoyed to find ribbed cotton tanks were selling for $150 at my favorite boutiques. WTH? Yes, they’re utterly soft, yes, they’re made of brushed cotton with a slight stretch, and yes, they will never lose their shape– according to the cute young salesgirl who probably spends her entire salary on said tanks (When I was cute and young I had a cute young friend who worked at Fred Segal– she could not pay her rent or bills but owned at least 5 pairs of $200 pajama pants) but seriously, they are Just. Tank. Tops! I’ve been wearing Hanes boy tanks (aka wife beaters) for years but they’re not long or fitted enough for my current uniform (a leather vest or jacket with leggings and high boots)– I wanted the same stretchy softness but longer so I can layer it under my vest and over the leggings but I did not want to shell out hundreds of dollars for a couple of lame tank tops! I decided to go to my frugal hang out, Tar-jay, and am so glad I held out. I found the greatest tanks, ever, for $8 a piece! HANES has a slim cut stretch tank top that hits right at the hips– perfect for skinny jeans and leggings. I could not grab them off the shelves quick enough (I got black, white and brown– not pictured here) and think you should go grab a couple, too. I couldn’t find it on the Target website but it’s here on Hanes.com for $8.

yay! i’m so over my splendid and james perse basics getting holes in them and having the fabric pill…but they DO keep their shape…will def check these out
If any of you live near a J. Crew outlet, their tanks are on sale right now for $4.99 each.
When I was cute and young I had a cute young friend who worked at Fred Segal– she could not pay her rent or bills but owned at least 5 pairs of $200 pajama pants –> this story made me laugh.
It’s hard to find good tanks where I am, too.

the sad part is that it’s a true story! Kelly and I couldn’t understand this girl! $150 t shirts, $200 house pants to sleep… but no money for food or rent???
Yes, my wife beaters from Hanes keep their shape. Thsi is exactly the same, just longer and tighter.
I wear the ones from Old Navy…I have them in like 30 different colors (b/c I find them for $1.99 on sale sometimes). LOVE THEM! They have not failed me so far (: Glad you found these.
