An intimate presentation at Lincoln Center was the very best way to experience one of the most promising luxury brands of the moment, Holmes & Yang. The meticulously tailored pieces must be seen up close for the vision of veteran stylist Jeanne Yang and actress Katie Holmes to be fully appreciated.
The girls are both working moms with demanding lives (much like myself) and wanted to create easy, unequivocal pieces that enhance your current wardrobe. Going for a contrast between “menswear-inspired silhouettes and feminine fabrications,” Holmes and Yang succeeded in the very difficult: they’ve made a super-edited collection of just 14 looks feel honestly effortless.
It just doesn’t get more versatile than the duo’s quilted and paneled leather bomber jacket, to wear with your arsenal of jeans or a Holmes & Yang lightweight silk dress, or their fluidly fitting black jumpsuit-and-cardigan pairing. The femininity came via the flow, particularly of silk maxi-skirts, which you can smartly unbutton to your liking. Up-to-there slit? If you have the gams, go for it. Or opt for head-to-toe leather with their biker jacket and cropped pleated leather pants – so chic!
But the most versatile key piece might prove to be the buttery camel suede caplet, shown with red shorts, lending a casual ease to the sophisticated look. I have watched the brand grow from a few key essentials two years ago to a comprehensive line. From bras to long coats to a gorgeous pair of beaded tuxedo pants and camisoles we all need by the dozen, it’s all oh-so wearable. Bells and whistles might be invigorating, but nothing excites me like a collection that inspires me to simply get dressed.
