The first looks of Prabal Gurung‘s Spring 2013 show set the tone. Easy jackets of high-sheen silk-cotton mikado gained drama worthy of a dream: they have been finished off with cascading georgette tails. Shimmering embellishments, like dripping beads of aluminum and ice maco, enhanced the rapturous mood, and tees screen-printed with wings cemented the angelic theme, but keep in mind: this is an urban earth angel. One who not only knows how to cocktail-party, she can move. I love when athletic-wear is infused with flattering, feminine silhouettes.
Feathers, froth, and surrealist prints could easily have taken center stage, if it weren’t for Prabal’s ever-intriguing proportions and wicked detailing at constant play. With every strong lapel, sculptural jacket, or flared culotte short, a flurry of ruffles, whisper of sheer silk-chiffon, or burst of tulle appears to change the mood. A tulle corset gets a modern upgrade with geometric patches, while tank dresses go dreamy in floaty tulle.
But when it comes to real life (unless you’re a lucky starlet, and in that case, opt for a gown juxtaposing tiered ruffles against sporty paneling – it adds up to the perfect style equation), it’s the individual pieces that excite me the most. A neoprene sweatshirt earns a sweet makeover in graceful ivory with seductive peek-a-boo panels. Paired with black python shorts? Don’t mind if I do! I will also find one of Prabal’s statement dresses irresistible come spring (the hot-ticket dress is, indeed, what comes to mind when I think of his name). Out of the grand finale, an organza drop-waist dress exploding with ostrich plumes will ensure you’re the chicest attendee of any event.
