Best Trends of 2012: New Year, Same Trends

Best Trends of 2012

Collars: Even some of the best trends have limited shelf lives, but these five will stay strong through 2013. Collars have really just started. Whether you like yours built in like on this Marni cashmere top (on Net-a-Porter for $1,180) or as a necklace that you can throw on (perk: this is more versatile), collars are a sure-fire way to make your outfit stand out.

Lace details: Sometimes a fabric as provocative as lace is best kept in small measures. A little detailing can say a lot. Black and nude lace give this prim and proper floral Dolce & Gabbana dress (on Luisa via Roma for $2,925) some sass.

Black and white graphics: Stripes, dots, patterns – black and white graphics take two chic colors and make them into a stronger, trendier statement. It’s advanced color-blocking, really. Sporty stripes like on these Lanvin tuxedo pants (at Neiman Marcus for $1,515) give a sense of whimsy to serious pieces.

Peplum: Believe it or not, peplum was really big in the ‘80s. You wouldn’t know it from the sophisticated, girly peplum we saw this year. When placed at the right spot, the trend can be extremely figure flattering. If you’re still looking for the perfect New Year’s party dress, this strapless oxblood ABS (at Saks Fifth Avenue for $290) is it!

Capes: I love my black Holmes & Yang cape (at Barneys New York for $1,239)! It doubles as a jacket and the leather detailing makes me feel a little like a super hero (albeit, a very chic one). For Spring 2013, they’ve updated the style into a shorter beige number – because capes shouldn’t be left behind when winter ends!
