It took me awhile to digest all the drama and showmanship I saw on the NYFW runways. As much fun as it is to report on the spectacles, at the end of the day, it comes down to real life. My readers (and myself) really just want wearable, beautiful clothes that we can pull on and not think about. For that reason, one of the few collections that struck that chord with me was Holmes & Yang. Unlike the circus-like venues of most fashion shows (both indoors and out!), Katie and Jeanne chose to unveil their collection in a private suite at a posh hotel.

It was just the three of us, hanging out, sipping tea, and discussing the new fall pieces. Not only was this like a dream, this is the way clothes are meant to be shown! I was able to touch each piece, become acquainted with the garments (the way you do when you’re shopping or getting dressed), and talk to Katie and Jeanne about their motivation for creating them.

Tartan checks, a delicious cropped motorcycle jacket, peplums that are flattering (not ridiculous): I will wear it all. The real allure arrived via the little details that are very much identifiable as Holmes & Yang: petal-sleeve blouses, the element of elbow patches, and my favorite surprise: the cape! Chic sportswear aside, the duo also added red carpet-worthy gowns with Post-Deco beaded embellishments. This is not an ambitious attempt at attention, but a thoughtful and well-conceived wardrobe for the woman who not only wants it all, she does it all.
