Lanvin Opens NYC Flagship

LANVIN MADISON AVENUE_1st floor Bags.jpg

It's finally here! After much rallying from the label's faithful legion of big spenders, Alber Elbaz this week opened the doors to the Northeast's first Lanvin store--a 3,550-square-foot store on Manhattan's Upper East Side that, many years ago, housed a Versace flagship. This, the third Lanvin U.S. boutique following Miami and Las Vegas, spans three elegant floors in a landmark townhouse.

The store will carry the entire women's ready-to-wear and accessory collections (Bags! Shoes! Jewelry!) while also showcasing its Blanche, 22 Faubourg, Tailoring and Denim capsules. Highlighted amongst all the stunning garments will be whimsical Lanvin tchotchkes, including gift items like umbrellas, stationary, playing cards, music boxes and hand painted porcelain dolls. Elbaz designed the store to reference the elegance of a women's club while simultaneously maintaining the ambience of intimacy and comfort felt in one's home. Love the antique chandeliers!

Night Out with Erin Fetherston for Juicy Couture (Updated!)

user-pic

A few months ago some of you may have heard the announcement that Juicy Couture hired Erin Fetherston to guest design a collection as well as act as a creative consultant for the brand. She's currently hard at work on her limited edition collection (including her version of the classic Juicy tracksuit!), and the pieces are slated to launch for holiday. To get us excited about the collaboration Juicy and Erin hosted an intimate dinner at Meet in Soho (complete with Champagne Taittinger Prestige Rosé :-)) followed by some late-night shopping in the Juicy Couture West Village store in NYC (we were actually given a Sony Bloggie to document the happenings!).

I own at least a dozen Juicy sweatpants - all of which I bought freshman year of college from Shopbop. I don't wear them out in public anymore (I really don't need a cherry and the word Juicy on my bum at this age!), but I wear them to sleep almost every night. When it comes to loose-fitting, comfy sweatpants, Juicy still makes the most flattering ones. Little did I know they make a whole lot more!

I spoke with Erin Fetherston about what attracted her to the brand and she said she's always been a fan and thinks her aesthetic meshes well with Juicy's. She also told me she was most excited to re-work their tracksuit (which is celebrating its 10th anniversary soon!). Fetherston is incredibly sweet, super soft-spoken, model tall, and has the most gorgeous porcelain complexion. Sadly we didn't get to preview any of her pieces at the event, but she said to expect a mix of dressed-up feminine and more casual pieces. Jump for more on what I discovered in the Juicy Couture boutique and some fun event images!

Shakira x Roberto Cavalli at 2010 World Cup

user-pic
cavalli_world_cup.jpgcavalli_world_cup2.jpg
Is Shakira showing her Italian allegiance at this year's World Cup? It may seem so, as the sultry singer is set to wear a full Roberto Cavalli look for her performance at the opening ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg on June 10. Anyone who's a soccer fan will know that Shakira's new single, "Waka-Waka," is the official song of the games. For the occasion, she'll be wearing a black and white zebra-printed jumpsuit, a silk fringed skirt (which detaches) and bracelets with brown leather fringe and gun silver irregular pearls created especially for her by Cavalli.

Sex and the City 2: Sneak Preview Stills

user-pic

sex-and-the-city05.jpg

Is anyone as excited as I am for the release of "Sex and the City 2" on May 27? I have no doubt everyone who reads this blog is counting down the days until the movie hit theaters nationwide. In the meantime, have a peek at these preview stills from the film. How major is that shoe "fridge?" It seems like it belongs to Carrie Bradshaw, but you never know! Carrie's closet has clearly expanded in the sequel; witness the shot that shows a space twice the size of her old digs (fun fact: Net-a-porter.com provided all the clothing staged in the closets). As glamorous as the movie remains, Michael Patrick King was conscious of the economic turmoil the world experienced while filming and thus the final result is sensitive to the realities of life (save for the Abu Dhabi desert fantasy vacation scenes, where no expense was spared in the script writing). Look for Carrie to also sport numerous Halston dresses in the film--she recently signed on as president of Halston Heritage. And lest "Sex and the City" faithfuls get nostalgic to the series' HBO days, costumer Patricia Field has brought back the John Galliano for Dior newspaper dress Carrie wore in that pivotal season three moment while confronting Natasha.

dianevonfurstenberg2.jpg

Andre Leon Talley is presenting his namesake's Lifetime Achievement Award to Diane von Furstenberg at the Savannah College of Art and Design tonight. He also curated an exhibit, Journey of a Dress, at the Gutstein Gallery. He takes us on a journey of the wrap dress along with Diane's achievements. In each installation, he mixes vintage with current to show the timelessness of this universal design. In the first picture here, you can see the first wrap dress ever made, the twig dress in green. To the right is a black and white geometric print that Michelle Obama wore in a family portrait. And I actually have the long black gown with lace shoulders on the left! There are also portraits through the years, like the one here - I LOVE this photo, I am going to try to blow it up and put it in my room!! Diane is truly a legend and has defined modern fashion for generations. Congratulations, I am looking forward to seeing her receive this much deserved award. There will also be a fashion show for SCAD students, which will be streamed live tonight at 8pm ET, click here to view (it will be up for a few weeks).

mk_carmen_kass.jpg
Michael Kors and his glam squad wrapped shoot on the king of all-American sportswear's Fall 2010 campaign just an hour or so ago in Los Angeles, and judging from these first behind-the-scenes photos--which show more environment than actual outtakes--the images should be solid, tried-and-true Kors fun and zest. While Kors' 64-look fall show this past February in New York showed chunky cashmere sweaters, camel suede wrap shirts, distressed leather cargo vests and floor-skimming sequined jersey gowns, one would've thought Aspen or Lake Tahoe would've been the go-to destination for the shoot. After all, the backstage inspiration board (see photo) for models did read: "You rock the room from NY to Gstaad to late nights in Paris. Be strong, upbeat and confident!" Blame it on the purse-pinching economy perhaps, but either way, Kors makes the magic happen wherever he goes.

It looks like the Kors team brought in piles of autumnal leaves to a park in L.A. for the images, which star campaign regulars Carmen Kass and Noah Mills photographed by Mario Testino and styled by longtime house friend Brana Wolf. Doesn't Kass look absolutely adorable jumping in the pile of leaves? (I'm having high school cheerleader flashbacks) In the past Kors has utilized motorcycles, helicopters, private jets, yachts and even a Rolls-Royce to illustrate his unabashed New York uptown glamour point of view, so I wonder what form of rugged machinery Kors has brought in for this go around as I eagerly await the final results of this campaign, the first images of which will break in August magazines. American sportswear is really having a moment right now--in May the Costume Institute will debut American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity--and who better to exemplify that nationalistic pride, with a healthy dose of razzle-dazzle, than Mr. Kors? As for me, I'm just waiting for my shredded silver-fox anorak to arrive.

Alberta Ferretti Launches Online Store

user-pic
alberta_ferreti_website_launch.jpg

I used to adore Alberta Ferretti dresses-- they are glamorous, elegant and flattering in an other worldy way.  But then I met her in person... and have not bought another Ferretti dress since. Not only was she rude to customers at the party honoring her, half way through the event she decided to pretend she doesn't speak English so she didn't have to speak to guests any more!  I mean it's fine if she actually DID NOT speak English but I'd just heard her conversing with someone earlier, in English.  The event was in the US, so you'd think she'd want to connect with her customers???  Or bring a translator if she was shy?  Whatever. She just unveiled her first online store, and will be providing styling advice to the site's most loyal customers based on their purchases.  It was reported that she'll be contacting them directly to offer tips for styling.  I'm guessing English speaking buyers need not apply?

WWD also reported that Ferretti said she wanted to build "a direct relationship that can be stimulating" for both herself and her customers. "I target contemporary women and I find it extremely interesting to be close to my customers, whom I love to advise and who are, for me, a very important source of inspiration." Really, coulda fooled me.

If you care, her website is here.

Hermès Toasts First Men's Store

user-pic

john-slattery.jpgkatie-holmes.jpgkyra-kevin.jpg

Hermès fêted the opening of its first-ever men's store--dubbed "Hermès Man on Madison"--at 691 Madison Avenue on Tuesday that drew such celebrity fans as Katie Holmes, Martha Stewart, Mad Men's John Slattery and Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. It was an amazingly executed soiree! Guests were ushered in by greeters clad in black topcoats with Hermès orange scarves, and after a glass (or two) of Champagne and caviar canapés, I headed to the nearby Park Avenue Armory for the afterparty.

That's when my jaw dropped.

I've been to my fair share of extravaganzas in my career--Fendi's Great Wall fashion show in Beijing, Ferragamo's 85th anniversary bash in Shanghai and Valentino's 45th anniversary couture show/swan song in Rome--and this one easily ranked up there as one of the best. Ever. To echo the night's masculine theme, 1,000 guests were greeted by an art installation of an LED horse (a nod to the brand's heritage) that featured thousands of fiber optic lights aglow in Hermès orange, natch, custom made by the Japanese artist Makoto Tojiki, as they arrived. From there, I had the choice to enter one of four rooms: the travel room; the library; the game room and a jazz club. I nearly died.

The library boasted one wall of floor-to-ceiling factory windows and another featuring floor-to-ceiling library shelves stocked with 8,000 hand-dyed books designed as a dramatic installation. I had my caricature done by illustrator Caitlin McGauley while noshing on chilled lobster tails, Wagyu beef, baby Colorado lamb chops, Iberico ham and foie gras brûlé. Even the napkins were made from genuine linen! Next door was the game room, where I played a round of air hockey with a friend, but there was everything from vintage pinball machines to pool and ping pong tables. The travel room featured a feast of global cuisine: dim sum (China); tacos (Mexico); Indian Chat (India) and crepes (France), along with a Turkish coffee bar. It was almost too much. Then I entered the last room, aka the jazz club. I was ushered to a table and a waiter brought over Champagne and oysters for me to enjoy while a trio of performers entertained: jazz pianist Barry Harris; French music group Venus Gets Even and New York local young rock band Locksley.

I almost forgot that New York City was getting a snowstorm that eventually dumped a foot of snow I was dancing so hard! My friend, the incredibly talented DJ Coleman, spun a late-night rager that had everyone reliving their Studio 54 days. What a way to usher in the start of New York Fashion Week!

RM Roland Mouret Unveils Collection for Lane Crawford

user-pic
rmlanecrawford.jpg

Hong Kong snobs, get your spanx on, RM Roland Mouret is launching a capsule collection for Lane Crawford this spring! The designer unveiled three pencil style dresses and two mix/match outfits yesterday in Hong Kong (after meeting with 20 lucky Hong Kong tai tais). Mouret said he based the collection on his interpretation of Chinese style as a balance between powerful femininity and urban strength. There are only 14 pieces of each design from the capsule collection, which will be split between Lane Crawford's Hong Kong and Beijing stores.  Prices will range from $500USD -$2,000USD

"Europeans are very conservative, but Chinese women are not scared of color, so I used a bold palette of scorching reds and fuchsia hues," Mouret said. "The weather is also an influencing factor. Because of the heat, I went with a stretch crepe which is light, but has a high-end feel and yet still very urban."  Mouret also said he feels his iconic silhouette is suited for the petite Asian frame-- I'm weeping, it's so true!  I have a dozen of his dresses in my closet and they are truly the most flattering for my tiny size!  Oh how I wish I was in Hong Kong right now. Must dial my local snobs there to snatch up a few pieces for me.
