Fashion of Summer 1972 is Surprisingly Relevant

SEARSONE042809.jpgSEARSTWO_redrobe.png

I'll be the first to admit, I just don't have time to read many blogs but one that I do enjoy for the witty writing and relevant topics is Jezebel. I just have to share the 1972 Sears Spring Summer catalog, you will want to order if you could, except probably remade in cotton instead of everything polyester. I MUST have that all plaid fully coordinated suit!! Awesome!! And the beach robe is to die, you cannot go wrong with a full length hoodie, seriously, why don't they make them anymore? Not that I ever owned one, I was one year old in 1972 and I can't say that I know if this trend ever continued.

More after the jump.

Be still our hearts (and wallets!) Topshop lands in NYC!

When I was in London I indulged in Highstreet shopping. Topshop was my #1 destination because I'd heard so much about it. Unfortunately most of the items were similar to Forever 21 but luckily for me, there was a Kate Moss section full of cheap and fun clothes fashioned by the style icon herself. I bought a grey leather jacket that everyone covets and tries to buy from me-- it's distressed and has a bit of pleated ruffled detail-- very Kate Moss and very mine. I am excited about Topshop landing in NYC although now everyone will have it. But as a wise woman once told me, "stop being such a snob, fashion is for the masses!" What do you think? Are you excited about Topshop's landing stateside?

Topshop will open Thursday, April 2nd at 478 Broadway near Broome Street in Manhattan.

No love for Vera Wang Lavender?

vera_lavender_label.jpgHard times have hit Vera Wang's contemporary line, Lavender Label. Both Bergdorf Goodman and Saks have dropped the line for spring and even Neiman Marcus who had it in 30 stores has reduced it to single digit doors. Honestly, I am not surprised. Though I adore Vera Wang's castle collection the Lavender Label has never been up to Vera's par for me. Not that it was cheap, far from it, which may be the problem. The line's price points were from $200-$800 which is on the very high end of contemporary. I purchased a few dresses from Lavender Label years ago and dubbed them "expensive" cheap clothes. The items were not of the best quality but I was buying it for Vera's cool designs. Nowadays you can get pretty much the same stuff at Kohl's, no wonder no one's buying Lavender Label.

What about you-- have you purchased Lavender Label in the past and will you continue?

Matthew Williamson for H&M line

I'm not a huge Matthew Williamson fan - all that color is a little much for me, but I have to say that I'm getting seriously excited about his collection for H&M. Fashionisima has photos of all the pieces in the collection and I'm coveting almost all of them! The designer is pairing iconic styles from some of his past collections with bright colors from current runway looks. The limited edition womenswear collection will hit approximately 200 H&M store locations worldwide on April 23 and will include dresses, tops, shorts, and jump suits. The stand-outs in the collection are a bias-cut, butterfly printed dress with grosgrain straps which paired with a cashmere sweater that includes peacock embroidery over one shoulder is reminiscent of one of Williamson's favorite looks from his first show in 1997. Also included in the collection are pieces inspired by Williamson's most recent runway collection like an electric blue tuxedo with bold color-blocking. My favorites though are the fabulous show pieces -- an ultra-short, long-sleeved sequin dress with printed bursts of color and an evening dress recreated from one of Williamson's most celebrated pieces: a beaded ruffle gown in a tiger butterfly print. Also loving that fuchsia dress and the short shorts! Prices are going to be steeper than usual given the craftsmanship and materials that are going into this collection, but they're still a steal compared to Williamson's high-end line. Some sample prices and photos after the jump!

Jil Sander to design for Uniqlo

jilsanderuniqlo.jpgIt would be an understatement for me to say that I am surprised at the announcement of Jil Sander taking over the design reigns at Japanese retail conglomerate UNIQLO (most items are under $50). To do a capsule collection is one thing, to take over the creative designs is entirely another. It'd be similar to Thomas Keller taking over the reigns at McDonalds (actually not a bad thought!). Jil Sander will take over the creative reins for all the retailer's products excluding accessories and children's wear. The Japanese brand and Sander are also working to develop a special Uniqlo collection, bearing the designer's minimalist look, set to bow for the fall season.

As the shock slowly wears off, I am starting to get excited. I adore Jil Sander and will be looking forward to seeing her vision for the masses.

I Wanna Be a CHANEL Rock Star

chanelguiar3.jpg Indulge your rock n roll fantasies with the latest from CHANEL; and no-- it's not a handbag-- it's a signature guitar! I have always wanted to take guitar lessons and now is as good of a time as any since I am not getting any younger. I am making a list of 40 things I want to do before I turn 40 (with a big bash in Las Vegas with 40 friends, I am so cheesy but it's my party and I can do what I want!)-- guitar lessons is one of them along with singing in a nightclub (so random, right?  What about you?  Do you have random stuff you want to do before you turn a certain age?)

The CHANEL Guitar first appeared on the Spring Summer 2009 runway draped across a model in Look 48. The white leather quilted case appeared on the arm of a model in Look 30. The guitar is made of spruce wood and available in black or white ($5450). The matching guitar case is made of quilted calfskin and is also available in black or white ($11,500). Available at select CHANEL Boutiques, 800-550-0005. (Jump for more photos! Courtesy of CHANEL USA)

Halston goes digital: The future of fashion shows

See the Halston 2009 collection in the comfort of your own home! If all fashion shows go to video we won't have to fight the crowds anymore but that's part of the fun of Fashion week! I still like seeing the clothes up close and personal so I'll be attending the Halston presentation next week. There are some things that can not be replaced.

Pheobe Philo back on the fashion train at Celine

After a three year, self imposed "time out" from fashion (to be full time mommy to 4 year old Maya and 20 month old Marlowe)-- Phoebe Philo is ready to get back to the top of the fashion game. Recently named the Creative Director of Celine, Philo says she is excited to get back to work. Her first designs for Celine, to be unveiled in June for the pre-spring and cruise seasons, sound like they're in tune with the times, underlining how much the industry has changed.

Fireworks are out: Realism is in. "[Celine] never stood for flashy fashion. It always felt like it was pretty sober, and that feels really relevant," Philo said in her first interview since taking the creative helm of the brand, owned by luxury giant LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. "It's going to be more about a foundation for a wardrobe."

Seriously, I have not bought single thing from Celine since Michael Kors was at the helm (my black platform Celine shoes are so worn out but I refuse to give them up!). I am really excited to see what Philo shows in June. Stay tuned for more coverage! (source:WWD)

Marc Jacobs is downsizing show by half.

mjwwd0131.jpgNow I'm certain we won't be going to the Marc Jacobs show on Monday Feb 16th. Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs International, said that for the designer's fall show on Feb. 16 at the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue, the guest list is being cut dramatically.

The company will reduce the number of those invited from 2,000 (1,100 seated and 900 standing) - to 700, or 500 seated and 200 standing. MJ also cancelled his usual party after the show. Bummer, what will all the party crashers do this season?

What comes between her and her Calvins...?

calvinad.jpg
Is this what retail marketing has come to? Remember the scandal Brooke Shields caused when nothing came between her and her Calvins? That photo now seems like it was produced by Disney compared to the latest Calvin Jeans Ad. I have always wanted a daughter but for the first time ever, I am glad I won't have to worry about a daughter seeing this kind of commercial. Good thing it was banned because this is so inappropriate for tv I can't believe it was made! Seriously, this is neither creative nor artistic, it's just a bunch of naked people rubbing themselves on each other. Check out the banned commercial here.

Please watch it and tell me if I'm being a prude or if this is pornography. (Jump for more!)
